Fourth Precinct Frequently Asked Questions
How much do you get paid?
We do not get paid. We are volunteers.
Do you carry guns?
Although some municipalities in NY State allow auxiliary police to carry guns, in Nassau County we do not.
All officers are trained to use police batons and the proper use of all levels of force from
verbal to deadly physical.
What are the benefits of joining?/Why should I join?
Many officers in the program are waiting on lists to become police officers. It is generally considered
a good addition to your background on the application, and some municipalities give auxiliaries
preferential treatment during the hiring process. The experience will also better prepare you for
the challenges of becoming a police officer. Additionally, some colleges give credit for your
volunteered time. Of course, you will be helping to improve the quality of life in our community.
What is you primary role?
We have several roles. When on regular patrol, we are another set of eyes and ears for the
police department, as well as a visible deterrent to crime. At incident scenes or special
functions we can function as security and crowd control, traffic control and/or assist
the police department in any other way as needed. During emergencies we can be activated
by the Governor or County Executive and used at the discretion of the Police Department.
What training do you receive?
Every officer goes through an 24 week abridged version of the Nassau County Police Academy
which is taught by academy instructors one night a week. This includes the use of force,
baton training, incident control, traffic control, use of the radio, hazardous materials training,
paperwork, criminal law, law governing auxiliaries, chain of command, etc. Additional training for
EMT certification and supervisory incident control are also available for those interested.
